Short Pieces on Out

The last of the small pieces I’ve been contributing to is online, an appreciation of Out, by Natsuo Kirino. Only three of Kirino’s many novels have been translated English, but Out – her breakthrough book in Japan – is one of the best noir novels I’ve read in years and I just can’t recommend it enough. The story of four women attempting to cover up the murder of one’s husband – and how their efforts go progressively, horribly wrong – Out is relentless, especially with regard to tracking the socia-economic aspects of each woman, and how her lack of freedom figures into her choices. An answer to a question too few people have asked, Out is like something out of Jim Thompson, if Thompson was a cold-eyed feminist.
