Short Pieces on La Maison de Rendez-Vous

Another small piece is online now at, about La Maison de Rendez-vous, the 1966 novel by Alain Robbe-Grillet. This was the first novel in some years from Robbe-Grillet, who’d taken a break from his first three nouveau roman novels to write the screenplay for Alain Resnais’ L’Année dernière à Marienbad, and then to write and direct his own first fearture, L’Immortelle (which remains practically unviewable due to distribution issues). La Maison de Rendez-vous is a near-hysterical Orientalist fantasy, as audacious as it is unapologetic. It’s really like Robbe-Grillet was asked one day whether he’d continue to write novels, took the question as a dare, and came roaring back, grinning like a fiend, with this.
